Tobacco use on Guam
is prevalent as smoking plays a major role in the morbidity
and morality of our people. The 2001 Behavioral Risk
Surviellance data ranks Guam as having
the highest adult smoking rate among all the states and territories.
Our island's smoking rate of 31.2% even
surpasses Kentucky, a tobacco producing state,
whose smoking rate
is 30.9%.
Data collected from
the Department of Education’s 2003 Youth Risk Behavior
Survey reveals:
23.3% of middle school students are
current smokers
31.6% of high school students are current
smokers
395 of the 691 deaths occurring in Guam
in 2001 can be attributed to the addictive, harmful,
lethal habit of smoking.
The Tobacco
Free Guam Program, through community interventions and mobilization,
counter-marketing,
policy development and implementation, and surveillance and
evaluation, seeks to achieve the following program goals:
Prevent initiation of tobacco use among
young people
Eliminate exposure to second-hand
smoke
Promote cessation among adults and
young people who use tobacco
Identify and eliminate tobacco-related
disparities among specific population groups
